Lifestyle Design

Here are some resources I have found helpful in leaving a ‘secure’ job, overcoming scarcity thinking and building a joy-filled adventurous life.

Books*

Martha Beck was one of the first life coaches. This book offers encouragement and strategies for following your inner wisdom and intuition. It was a powerful read for me!

Finding Your Own North Star by Martha Beck

The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris

Tim Ferriss is the OG of lifestyle design. If you are still stuck in the 9 to 5 mentality, this book is for you. Some of the tech he mentions is outdated now and the book lacks the compassion that his newer work has. However, there is a lot of great stuff in this book. It is one of the books that gave me the motivation and courage to leave my salaried position.

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

Big Magic is a must-read for creative people (that’s everyone). Liz Gilbert provides lots of inspiration to follow your gut and live a life that brings you joy. Conventions be damned!

you-are-a-badass-at-making-money.jpg

You Are a Badass at Making Money is an irreverent personal development book about changing one’s relationship to money. Unlike Rachel Rodgers, Sincero does not have an altruistic goal for accumulating wealth so that makes it bit harder to fully buy into (lol) her teachings as long-term motivation. She also makes no mention of systemic oppression. However, she offers plenty of practical strategies for getting out a sad-sack-mopey-pants rut. And she’s funny! I’ve listened to this book 6 times (!) as a way of putting the brakes on the habitual thought patterns that I want to let go of.

The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

Gay Hendricks breaks our skillsets up into 4 zones, with Zone of Genius being at the top. He encourages you to live and work in your Zone of Genius. Get this book. It is incredibly inspiring and will help you get the busywork off your plate to focus on what you do best.

Podcasts

Dare to Lead

Brené Brown interviews thought-provoking leaders on this podcast. If you don’t know Brené’s work, check this out asap.

Smart Passive Income

This show is like How I Built This for online businesses. Pat interviews people who started businesses without outside capital. It is a bit douchy, but not as much as some others in the genre. I listened to this a lot when I was first getting started. The interviews with entrepreneurs were super helpful and inspiring.
